 Tips and Skills to improve the impact of your peer review

Peer review is vital for ensuring the quality, scientific rigor, and positive community impact of research publications. Origin Editorial has developed a peer review training program for PCORI-funded research reports that seeks to improve the ease, quality and impact of peer reviews submitted by content experts, such as researchers and clinicians, and patient or caregiver reviewers. Thank you for your interest in reviewing PCORI-funded research reports, and for taking the opportunity to improve your reviewing experience.

This program is provided in two tracks: one for patient, caregiver, and stakeholder reviewers, and one for subject matter expert reviewers; and it includes the following resources:

This training program is for both prospective and current reviewers. After watching each video, please take a moment to provide your feedback using the link below the video.  Your responses are anonymous and are only intended to be used in aggregate to improve the training process.

1.  Patient and Caregivers in PCORI Peer Review – Training Video

This video for patient, caregiver, and stakeholder reviewers presents an overview of Draft Final Research Reports (DFRRs), the peer review process, and how research results are disseminated. The PCORI methodology standards for DFRRs are explained. This training summarizes how patient, caregiver, and stakeholder experiences shape the development of the research.

3. Writing Your Review – Training Video

This video for patient, caregiver, and stakeholder reviewers provides guidance on what is expected in a review.  Reviewers will learn what changes authors are able to make during the peer review process.  The video also offers examples of comments that reviewers can provide that help investigators, as well as the comments that may be less useful to authors. The benefits of peer review to research overall and the importance of patients and caregivers in peer review are discussed.

5. Interview with Patient Reviewer Board Member on Peer Review – Training Video

This video for reviewers of PCORI-funded Draft Final Research Reports (DFRR) presents the perspective of Patient Reviewer Board Member RC Tepel. It covers one reviewer’s approach to peer review of PCORI-funded research. Recommendations are made on how a patient or caregiver reviewer can contribute to research overall and to DFRRs, in particular.

2. Components of PCORI Peer Review – Training Video

This video for patient, caregiver, and stakeholder reviewers provides a guide for what reviewers should expect to find in the content of the Draft Final Research Report and gives examples of questions on which reviewers can comment in their review. These template questions focus on eliciting a patient or caregiver’s perspective on how patients have contributed to the research and the potential impact of the research on related patient groups.
