Authorship Policies

Any individual meeting the qualifying criteria for authorship for PCORI Final Research Reports should be listed as an author in the ReView peer review system and on the title page of the Report. If an individual does not meet the qualifying criteria for authorship, they should be listed in the Acknowledgment s.

Authors should agree on the order of the authorship list ing prior to the submission of the PCORI Draft Final Research Report (DFRR). All list ed authors must take public responsibility for the content of the Report submitted to PCORl’s Editorial Office at Origin Editorial.

Upon submission, all authors will receive an automated email from the peer review system (ReView ) to en sure that they are aware of, and approve, the submission of the PCOR I Draft Final Research Report (DFRR), its content, and its authorship listing.

■   Qualifying Criteria for Authorship

Authorship criteria are based on the International Committee of Medical journal Editors (ICMJE) Uniform Requirements for Reports Submitted to Biomedical Journals.

The ICMJE lists four criteria for authorship cr edit. Authors must meet all four criteria to be listed as an author:

  • Substantial contributions to conception and design, acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data, and
  • Drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content, and
  • Final approval of the version to be posted, and
  • Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and

■  Authorship of Group and Multi-Center Studies

Please follow ICMIE recommendations regarding group authorship. Only individuals who meet ICMJE authorship criteria should be list ed in the byline and these authors’ names will appear in MEDLINE.

Large, multi-author groups can be designated by a group name. For individuals included in the group name, MEDLINE will list the names of these members. Individual members included as part of the group name should be listed in a separate section above the Acknowledgments.

Byline example

Smith A.,Jones B., Canadian Pediatric Inpatient Research Network (PIRN) Johnson A., Garcia R., US Multi-Society Task Force

Additional study group member list example (place above Acknowledgments)

Additional members of the Canadian  Pediatric Inpatient Research Network (PIRN) include A, Author, B, Author, and C. Author.

■  Acknowledgments

Contributors who meet some but not all ICMJE criteria for authorship should be listed in the Acknowledgments. It is expected that those being acknowledged have given their permission to be
named. Examples of activities that alone, without additional contributions, do not qualify an individual as an author are writing or editing assistance, including medical writers; funding acquisition; or general administrative support. The contribution or involvement of any statistician in the writing and/or review processes must be declared in the Acknowledgments of the Report unless the statistician meets authorship criteria.

■ Corresponding versus Submitting Authors

The Corresponding Author and Submitting Author may often be the same individual; however, the submission and peer review system, ReView, allows Corresponding and Submitting Authors to be listed separately. This allows both roles to have different responsibilities as described below.

Note: The Submitting Author is added to the author list in ReView. If the submitting individual is a representative of the Corresponding Author, such as a research manager or an administrator, and
should not be listed as an author in the final posted Report, inform the Editorial Office.

Corresponding Author Responsibilities

The corresponding author takes responsibility for and speaks on behalf of all authors.

Pre-Review and Peer Review Process:
• Confirms that the Report is in full adherence with all PCORI requirements and submission
policies.
• Receives correspondence from ReView, including decision letters, notifications, and reminders,
regarding the status of the Report.
• Confirms that all authors receive timely information related to the peer review of the DFRR.
• Confirms that any requested revisions are received by all authors and that the revisions are
completed by the requested revised date and in full agreement by all authors listed in the DFRR.
• Provides to the Editorial Office written confirmation that all authors consent to any requested
additions or deletions to the DFRR’s authorship.
• Confirms that all authors have access to the final version of the Report that is submitted to the
Editorial Office for peer review and agree to the author list and author contributions.
• Confirms that all authors have seen the final version of the Report before it is posted on the
PCORI website.

Submitting Author Responsibilities

The Submitting Author handles the process of submitting the DFRR and subsequent revisions within
ReView. Note: If the Submitting Author needs to be changed after submission to another author listed in
the Report, please notify the Editorial Office.
Pre-Review and Peer Review Process:
• At initial submission and subsequent revision, ensures that the DFRR meets submission
requirements and uploads all required files and documentation to ReView.

■ Authorship Changes

Authorship may change from initial submission due to the:
• addition of an author
• deletion of an author
• rearrangement of author order
• change in corresponding author.
It is not the role of the Editorial Office to make authorship decisions, but all authorship changes (except
a change in corresponding author) should be accepted by all authors, including those being
deleted/added/reordered. This policy ensures that all authors are informed of, and in agreement with,
any changes.
The author list of all revisions will be checked against the author list of the initial submission for changes
(addition, removal, or change in author order). If the author list has changed, the Editorial Office will
contact the corresponding author by email for an explanation of the change(s).
If the change(s) to the authorship was intentional, the Corresponding Author must provide the Editorial
Office with written consent for the change(s) from all authors, including the added/deleted authors. This
consent must be made in writing, acceptable via either email or a signed letter (or a combination of both).
No changes are considered accepted and final until such documentation is received and verified by the
Editorial Office. (Note that the author list is checked at the revision submitted stage for convenience, and
the revision may still be assigned to an Editor for normal handling.)
For a change in corresponding author, please submit your request to the Editorial Office.
PCORI allows the re-posting of final Reports to change author names in special circumstances. This
includes name changes for transgender or non-binary authors and marriage. Other name changes are
possible in exceptional circumstances and at the discretion of PCORI. For name changes after the Final
Report is posted, please contact PCORI.

Author Identification

Origin endorses ORCID and encourages all corresponding authors to provide an ORCID iD when
submitting a Report. We encourage co-authors to register and use their ORCID iD as well.
