Why patient-centered peer review is important
Patient-centered peer review integrates both subject matter
expert reviews and patient reviews, ensuring that research
incorporates diverse perspectives and meets the needs of
patients, enhancing relevance and applicability to real-world
healthcare settings. This approach elevates transparency, trust,
and accountability within the scientific community, leading to
improved healthcare outcomes and patient satisfaction.

What Kind of Reviewer are you?

In addition to subject matter expert reviews, our innovative peer review process includes patient/caregiver or stakeholder reviews which reveal a broader picture of PCORI-funded research impact. Discover your unique reviewer role and contribute to impactful research outcomes today!

Patient / Caregiver Reviewer

Patients and caregivers with experience with the disease or condition
relevant to the study are invited to review DFRRs, commenting on the
study’s relevance and usefulness. Patient/caregivers should feel free to
share their honest opinion on the study, particularly on whether the patient
perspectives, values, and preferences were adequately considered in study
design and implementation, and whether the study findings are useful to
them in making decisions about care options.

Stakeholder Reviewer

Representatives from stakeholder groups, such as payers, employers, the
life sciences industry, or policy makers, also may be invited to comment as
part of the review process.

Subject Matter Expert Reviewer

SME Reviewers are researchers who have advanced knowledge in a specific
field. SME Reviewers have expertise in a particular area or topic and are
qualified to provide guidance and strategy in that field.
