Process Overview
From the reviewer perspective, peer review
for PCORI-funded reports can be categorized
by a 3-step process.

Peer Review Three Step Process
01DFRR Enters Expert Peer Review
An Associate Editor assigns two subject matter expert reviewers, a statistician, and at least one patient/caregiver, or stakeholder reviewer. Once reviewers have accepted, they have 14 days to complete and submit their reviews. However, reviewers who need extra time can request an extension by email here. Authors cannot see the names of those who review their manuscripts. Research reports are evaluated to determine how well
investigators met PCORI’s Methodology Standards.
02First Revision Decision
After the reviews are submitted, the assigned Associate Editor assesses the research
report and writes a letter synthesizing all reviewer comments and advising the
authors on how to proceed with their revisions. This “synthesis” letter along with the
reviewer comments are then sent to the authors.
03PCORI Final Review
After Associate Editor approval, the report moves to the PCORI Peer Review Director for
final approval. With final approval, the research report is made publicly available on the
PCORI website.
