Introduction to the Peer Review Process
What is a Draft Final Research Report (DFRR)?
What are the peer reviewer policies?
PCORI’s reviewer policies can be found here.
How much time does it take to review a research report?
You will be invited to review a research report when it has completed Pre-Review, which is where the report is checked by the Origin Editorial Author Services team and PCORI Program Staff for readability and completeness. The research report will be roughly 30 pages in length (15,000 words) and may include additional tables, figures, and other material. Reviewers report spending approximately 5-8 hours reviewing PCORI-funded research reports.
After you accept the invitation to review the report, you will have 14 days to complete and submit your review. You will also be asked to disclose your conflicts of interest at the time you submit your review comments.
What does PCORI consider to be a conflict?
PCORI’s authorizing legislation requires every individual completing a review of a PCORI-funded report to disclose conflicts involving any “association, including a financial, business, or personal association, that has the potential to bias or has the appearance of biasing” one’s decisions relating to PCORI. Upon agreeing to review a PCORI-funded research report, you will be asked to disclose
• Financial and Business Associations
• Personal Associations
What are the different reviewer roles in peer review for PCORI-funded research reports?
Peer review of PCORI-funded research reports engages a broad range of communities that have an interest in the effectiveness of our healthcare system.
• Subject Matter Expert
• Patient/Caregiver
• Stakeholder
Who sees my comments?
The peer review process for PCORI-funded research reports is single anonymous, meaning that the Associate Editors and reviewers see the names of the report authors, but the authors do not know the identity of the reviewers. De-identified reviewer comments are shared with the authors after all reviews have been submitted. Reviewer comments are not edited, so the authors receive comments as they are written by the reviewers. The Associate Editors also provide a synthesis letter to the authors that synthesizes all reviewer comments and advises the authors on how to proceed with their revisions.
